The AGM Club Night was an event hosted at The Exchange Café Bar on Saturday 5th December. The evening kicked off with a round of Pecha Kuchas presented by artist initiators and organisations active over the past 15 years, through to organisations still in the early stages of development. Speakers included Back Lane West and Art Surgery through to Keiken and Medium Rare. The evening also included The Wanderers Book Launch, The Wanderers was a programme of one-off events, installations, performances and talks around Falmouth and the surrounding waterways of the Carrick Roads in summer 2015. The project ran parallel to Newlyn Art Gallery’s international exhibition In Search of The Miraculous and brought together developing artists to create site-specific work that went beyond the horizon in pursuit of new experiences and precarious journeys.
On Wednesday 9th December a talk night took place in The Exchange Café Bar. Sam Thorne, founder of Open School East and previously Artistic Director of Tate St Ives, spoke about his knowledge and experience of artist led practice. You can listen to the talk here.

A ‘Makers Market’ was held the following weekend, where The Exchange gallery was full of craftsman and artists selling their unique wares, including some exquisite artist made books, with works from Oliver Udy, Brigette Ashton, Jacob Louis Beaney, Oliver Raymond-Barker, Clare Thornton and Rosie Kliskey.
To conclude the month of activity, a day of workshops took place at The Engine Room at The Exchange. The afternoon focused on what can be done to ensure that projects have a life beyond the duration of an event through a programme of discussion based and making events. Artist and lecturer Alice Mahoney held a drop-in sketchbook/notebook making workshop and there was the opportunity to test out DIY marbling materials and techniques.
During the programme Field Notes provided one to one advice sessions and structured group activities for early career creatives, including a workshop for Newlyn Art Gallery’s The Collaborators, a group of young artists aged 18-25. The workshop focused on developing an exhibition proposal; participants were tasked with selecting a location, picking artworks, identifying the audience and developing a funding plan, such as a pay to enter event or solely applying to an external funding body. The final stage involved applying for funding by pitching your idea to the workshop leaders and other attendees, everyone was provided with chocolate coins to place their vote towards a winner. After the success of the workshop we adapted and ran the model at future events, in more intimate settings participants work on their proposal independently but when we have run it on a larger scale, such as for cohorts of 80 students at Falmouth University, attendees develop their idea in groups.

FUNDERS AND PARTNERS
The Clubhouse was a participatory resource and development project celebrating, investigating and supporting artist-led culture in Cornwall and beyond. A free, open-access workspace for artists, curators, writers and cultural explorers was held at The Exchange Gallery in Penzance from October 2015 – January 2016, which was developed out of a model from The Curators Room. Oscillating between artwork, performance, information point and library, curators’ Field Notes were on hand to chat informally, engage in debate and assist with artist-led ailments such as statements, proposals, funding bids and budgets. Each fortnight different artist-led groups took over a part of the space, showcasing their activity or testing out new ideas. Throughout December Field Notes hosted The Clubhouse AGM, a programme of talks, workshops and events including PechaKuchas presentations, a Makers Market and the book launch of The Wanderers.
The Clubhouse was held at Newlyn Gallery & The Exchange and delivered in partnership with Back Lane West, The Fish Factory, Medium Rare, Cornwall Morphology and Drawing Centre, Goonhilly Village Green and W.A.N.K.
