Ceramics Workshop
Rosanna Martin
Penryn Arts Festival, 2017

In 2017 Field Notes re-envisaged the Penryn Arts Festival as a celebration of the creative practices of the town’s many resident artists and makers, and as an opportunity to share skills and interests. Throughout autumn and winter, a series of free artist led workshops and dinners took place in the Temperance Hall, in the centre of the town, providing opportunities for residents from different generations and communities to converse, learn skills and engage in creativity.
Ceramics workshop, Rosanna Martin, 2017
At the time of the festival Rosanna Martin had just established b.r.i.c.k.w.o.r.k.s. – an open access ceramic workshop at Jubliee Wharf the creative hub of studios by the river in Penryn. It was a bold and exciting addition to the town, so it seemed only fitting to commission Rosanna to lead the first workshop.
Rosanna taught hand-building techniques allowing every participant to make two clay plates/dishes. She provided tools and instruction for decoration with coloured slips and painting, sgraffito or mono-printing techniques. Then at the end of the workshop we walked all the plates down to the b.r.i.c.k.w.o.r.k.s. studio for firing. Everyone who took part was able to choose one plate to keep with the rest donated to Penryn Arts Festival to be used by participants of future workshops at the workshop dinners and displayed at the end of festival event.
