Design Your Own Exhibition Workshop

The Clubhouse AGM, 2015

As part of The Clubhouse, Field Notes hosted The Clubhouse AGM, a programme of talks, workshops and events at Newlyn Gallery and The Exchange that took place across December 2015.

During the programme Field Notes provided one to one advice sessions and structured group activities for early career creatives, including a workshop for Newlyn Art Gallery’s The Collaborators, a group of young artists aged 18-25. The workshop focused on developing an exhibition proposal; participants were tasked with selecting a location, picking artworks, identifying the audience and developing a funding plan, such as a pay to enter event or solely applying to an external funding body. The final stage involved applying for funding by pitching your idea to the workshop leaders and other attendees, everyone was provided with chocolate coins to place their vote towards a winner. After the success of the workshop we adapted and ran the model at future events, in more intimate settings participants work on their proposal independently but when we have run it on a larger scale, such as for cohorts of 80 students at Falmouth University, attendees develop their idea in groups.

FUNDERS AND PARTNERS

The Clubhouse was a participatory resource and development project celebrating, investigating and supporting artist-led culture in Cornwall and beyond. A free, open-access workspace for artists, curators, writers and cultural explorers was held at The Exchange Gallery in Penzance from October 2015 – January 2016, which was developed out of a model from The Curators Room. Oscillating between artwork, performance, information point and library, curators’ Field Notes were on hand to chat informally, engage in debate and assist with artist-led ailments such as statements, proposals, funding bids and budgets. Each fortnight different artist-led groups took over a part of the space, showcasing their activity or testing out new ideas. Throughout December Field Notes hosted The Clubhouse AGM, a programme of talks, workshops and events including PechaKuchas presentations, a Makers Market and the book launch of The Wanderers.

The Clubhouse was held at Newlyn Gallery & The Exchange and delivered in partnership with Back Lane West, The Fish Factory, Medium Rare, Cornwall Morphology and Drawing Centre, Goonhilly Village Green and W.A.N.K.
